Tony Hicks, a 6-foot-2 combo guard from St. Rita, has committed to the University of Pennsylvania.

Hicks, a senior, averaged a team-high 16 points per game for the Mustangs last season.

“You can’t get better with the education and the family atmosphere at Penn,” Hicks said. “The players were really cool when I visited. It just felt good.”

Hicks, a South Holland resident and McKinley Junior High graduate, whittled his potential suitors down to Penn, Ohio University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before settling on the Quakers, a member of the Ivy League.

“I’m glad it’s over,” said Hicks of the recruiting process. “Now I don’t have to worry about making that decision and I can focus on the season.”

St. Rita coach Gary DeCesare considers Penn a perfect fit for his shooting guard.

“Tony is very underrated,” DeCesare said. “He’s worked hard on his game. He’ll have a very good career in the Ivy League.”
