Tom Cappel, former longtime coach at Hillcrest, has been named the boys basketball coach at Crete-Monee.

He succeeds Matt Ryndak, who was charged May 25 with eight counts of aggravated sexual criminal assault against a minor. Ryndak led the Warriors to a 25-4 mark in his only season, which included the only sectional championship in the program’s history.

“Crete-Monee is fortunate to have Mr. Cappel join our boys varsity basketball program,” said Crete-Monee School District 201-U Superintendent John Rodgers in a press release. “He comes to us with many accomplishments, including a stellar win-loss record and other career achievements.”

Cappel retired from Hillcrest four years ago, registering a 502-146 mark over a 23-year period that included 20 conference championships, 12 regional and four sectional championships, and two Elite Eight appearances.

“I see big things for next year and the future of the varsity boys basketball program at Crete-Monee,” Cappel said. “We’re looking to continue the team’s upward mobility and achieve state-wide recognition.”
