Coming off its second loss of the season, Immaculate Conception overpowered the St. Edward 60-54 in Suburban Christian Gold Conference play on Thursday in Elmhurst. Brian Cheung led the Knights with 15 points and Eddie O’Halloran had a game-high 23 points for the Green Wave.
“Our kids played really hard,” said Green Wave Coach P.J. White. “We did a nice job. We talked about not getting frustrated and we got frustrated in the end. They just played better than us at the end of the game.”
The Knights (5-0, 17-2) used its size with Demetrius Carr (14 points) and Brian Harvey (nine points) to work the inside game while the speedy Cheung shot from the outside and was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.
“We’re coming off a tough loss to Aurora Christian,” said Carr. “We’re a pretty big team compared to teams in the conference, but as we keep going we have to play strong.”
It was Carr who rang up 12 points in the first half, including two three-pointers to put the Knights in command at the half 33-25.
“We want to score inside first then hit the outside jumpers,” said Knights coach Darren Howard. “Carr is that kind of athlete who can take over a game at points. There are three or four minutes that he breaks a game open for us.”
The Green Wave (2-3, 8-11) kept it close but just couldn’t cut into the Knights’ lead. The Knights led 47-37 at the end of three quarters. O’Halloran had a hot hand hitting three 3-point baskets but the Green Wave fell short in the end.
Antonio Domel and Doug Johnson had 10 points each for the Green Wave.
“We thought we had them in the fourth quarter once we started to come back,” said Johnson. “They’re a really good team and a lot bigger than us down low.”
