Charlie Tilson just picked up one honor and looks to be in line for another.
The New Trier senior outfielder was named Gatorade’s Illinois Baseball Player of the Year and is expected to be the state’s top pick in the annual Major League Baseball draft, which begins Monday evening.
Tilson, who has signed with Illinois, is the No. 80 national prospect according to Baseball America and is one of two Illinois players on the magazine’s National Top 200 list. Downers Grove South right-hander Nick Burdi, a Louisville recruit, is ranked No. 134 nationally by Baseball America.
The draft begins a three-day run with first-round selections scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Central time on Monday. Rounds 2-30 begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday and rounds 31-50 start at the same time Wednesday.
Other local high school players on the Baseball America top prospects list for Illinois include Providence right-hander Brandon Magallones, Hersey right-hander Joe Perricone, Glenbrook North right-hander Alex Hermeling and Wheaton North first baseman Jeff Schalk.
