Aurora Christian came to play, scoring early and often to defeat Aurora Central Catholic 11-1 in six innings Saturday in the finals of the Class 2A Seneca Regional.

Eagles pitcher Mitch Holtz went all way, limiting the Chargers to three hits while striking out seven. Josh Haugen went 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI.

Brandon Walgren singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning for the Eagles (26-9) and scored on a triple by Haugen. The Eagles continued to pound Chargers starting pitcher Matt Miller (5-5), scoring two runs in the second and third innings and one in the fourth.

Chargers coach Eric Fulara pulled Miller in the fifth inning. However, relief pitcher Mike Fidler couldn’t stop the Eagles, giving up five runs on five hits to end the game.

“We were locked in and focused from the beginning,” Eagles coach Andy Zorger said. “We put up a run in at least every inning. We’re going to be tough to beat if we can continue doing that. Mitch (Holtz) threw well, threw strikes and the defense showed up.”

Holtz (3-0) earned the win to remain undefeated for the season. He added two hits and an RBI to the offense.

“It’s pretty easy to do my job when you got 11 runs scored and the guys are making plays,” Holtz said. “My fastball felt good. It’s easy to get the fastball going when it’s warmer out.”

The Chargers (14-18) only run was scored by Jake McCarthy, who was hit by a Holtz pitch and came in on a single by Matt Musuras.

“It’s just wasn’t our day and hard to watch,” Fulara said. “We struggled to hit and the train came off the tracks. (Miller) was pretty inconsistent today. They swung the bats and we didn’t; that’s the difference in the game. They put the ball in play and when we put the ball in play it was at somebody.”

The Eagles move on to play Herscher in a Coal City Sectional semifinal on Wednesday.
