Baseball: Glenbrook North tops Libertyville in season finale

Not a lot of fine tuning is needed for Glenbrook North leading up to its first postseason game.

The Spartans got to Libertyville’s pitching early and grabbed an 11-4 victory in the final game of the regular season Saturday.

“I felt very good about the pitching, the hitting and the defense that we played today,” Glenbrook North coach Dom Savino said. “I think it’s one of the more complete games that we’ve played this year. It’s an outstanding way to end the regular season against a great program.”

Glenbrook North (24-11) played its version of small ball and at one point reeled off five straight singles.

Junior left fielder Brad Margolin opened up the scoring in the first as he stole third base and came home on a throwing error.

Junior third baseman TJ Tedeschi made it 2-0 with an infield single later in the inning.

The Wildcats got two men on to start both the second and fourth innings, but GBN’s Jake DeRousse limited the potential damage to just two runs in those instances.

In his only at-bat of the day, junior Josh Kaplan cleared the bases with a double down the right field line to finish up the scoring for GBN.

“It’s good to have the momentum going into the playoffs,” said senior center fielder Chad Bruce. “This game was great putting up all those runs because we’ve been on a bit of a dry streak right now and not getting as many runs as we’ve wanted. This is the best thing that could’ve happened for us.”

DeRousse threw five innings and gave up seven hits, four walks and four runs while striking out three.

In two innings of relief, junior Sing Fong struck out two and allowed just one hit.

In a losing effort, junior starting pitcher Michael Rogers threw just two innings and gave up nine hits, one walk and six runs.

Senior catcher Jason Scholl went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Tedeschi went 1-for-1 with a sacrifice fly, a walk and two RBI.

For Libertyville (21-11), junior catcher Evan Skoug and senior shortstop Anthony Mack both went 2-for-4 combining for half of their team’s hits.

“I really like where we’re at,” Savino said. “We still have a couple days of practice ahead of us before we get to Wednesday and it’s a couple more opportunities for us to get better.”
