Baseball: Streamwood’s Steve Diversey stepping down

Steve Diversey’s tenure as Streamwood’s baseball coach is drawing to a close.

Diversey informed his players last weekend he will step down from his post following the season, ending a successful five-year run leading the Sabres.

The decision to resign is one Diversey contemplated following last year’s record-breaking campaign that saw Streamwood win its first conference, regional and sectional titles. Diversey ultimately chose to come back and guide a group of talented returning players this year, but the road has proven more difficult for the Sabres.

Streamwood snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory against Elgin on Tuesday to improve its record to 8-14. Although the program’s streak of three straight winning seasons is in jeopardy, Diversey stills sees potential in his squad.

“We’re a tough team, and if we start clicking on all cylinders we can be a devastating team going into the postseason,” said Diversey, the 2011 Courier-News Coach of the Year. “I told them to finish strong for themselves, finish strong for me and let’s make a run in these last (13 games).”

Diversey cited a desire to spend more time with his family among the reasons he is stepping down.

Two years ago a shakeup within School District U46 led Diversey to move as a teacher from Streamwood to Elgin High, and the obstacles associated with working and coaching at separate schools was another factor in his decision.

Diversey owns a 93-66-2 record during his five years with the Sabres. His resume also includes coaching stops at Huntley and his alma mater Chicago Kelly.

Streamwood set a school record for wins each of the past two seasons, including last year’s 30-7 campaign.
