Baseball: Nick Goldsmith, St Rita blank Carmel

Getting the start Saturday night against Carmel, St. Rita sophomore Nick Goldsmith got a big opportunity to pitch in one of the premier matchups of the Southside Conference Challenge.

Goldsmith did not disappoint, allowing just two hits in six innings to help the Mustangs to a 5-0 win at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood.

“I was really excited,” Goldsmith said. “It was pretty cool to pitch in this park, especially since I haven’t gotten too many starts and my last outing wasn’t too good.”

Goldsmith scattered six walks and struck out two.

“It was the most wild I’ve been all season,” he said. “I didn’t give up many hits and my defense really helped me out with some big plays.”

After Carmel starter Dalton Wright was perfect through three innings, St. Rita (15-5) got going in the fourth.

Jake Shepski drew a walk and moved to third on Stefano Belmonte’s single. Wright appeared to escape when he struck out Connor McLain with two outs, but the third strike skipped past Carmel catcher Ian Kristan, allowing McLain to reach and Shepski to score.

Rick Faron (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) led off the fourth with a single, took second on Andrew Massey’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Chad Prieto’s pinch-hit double to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

St. Rita broke it open with three runs in the sixth. Faron delivered the big blow with a two-run single and stole home on a double steal.

“It was one of those nights where their guy was throwing well and we figured the first team to get one or two would win,” St. Rita coach Mike Zunica said. “I thought (Goldsmith) showed composure in some tight situations.”

Blake Busca and Brett Milazzo each had a hit for Carmel (11-7).
