Baseball: Fast start spurs Jacobs past Dundee-Crown
Jacobs scored five times in the first inning Wednesday to seize control on its way to a 9-2 nonconference win over visiting Dundee-Crown in Algonquin.
Jacobs’ quality pitching, clutch hitting and flawless defense paved the way for a triumph in a battle of District 300 rivals.
The first inning was the key for Jacobs (4-5). The Golden Eagles batted around and scored five times — which proved to be all they would need. Jacobs was aided by three D-C errors and a few other fielding miscues which helped keep the inning alive.
Jacobs coach Jamie Murray was very pleased with how well his team played against Dundee-Crown (3-5-1).
“This was a huge win for us against a great Dundee-Crown program,” said Murray.
“The guys are starting to buy into how we want them to play in order to succeed. Our team is so young and we constantly reinforce fundamentals and today showed that the extra practice is working. We will enjoy this win and tomorrow we will battle a tough Prospect team.”
The Chargers did put together a rally in the fifth inning when Kyle Bernhard and Dylan Kissack provided two-out RBI singles. That would be it, though, for the Dundee-Crown offense.
“You have to give credit to Jacobs,” said Dundee-Crown coach Tom Parisi. “They came out ready to play and we didn’t. You can’t make three errors in an inning and expect to win. We are a young team and still learning how to play varsity baseball.”
The Fox Valley Conference members participated in the first throwback game and it did not count in the league standings.
Each squad wore alternate uniforms, used wooden bats and welcomed a local travel team to take part in the pregame festivities.
Jacobs was led by Connor Conzelman. The Golden Eagles junior had three hits and drove in three runs.
“This was a huge game for us, because we haven’t been hitting the ball well,” said Conzelman.
“Maybe we should use wooden bats the rest of the season.”
Starting pitcher Max Rider was strong for Jacobs. The junior left-hander went 4.2 innings and allowed two runs on just four hits.
Dundee-Crown was led by Jake Romano, who had two hits and three stolen bases.
