Jordan Johnson scored 19 points and Waukegan rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to beat Vincent from Milwaukee 64-58 on Sunday in the final game of the inaugural Battle of the Borders Showcase.
Nine games were played over the weekend at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, with Illinois teams facing teams from Wisconsin. Waukegan’s win over Vincent (11-3) gave Illinois an 8-1 advantage.
“We asked the guys to play harder than they have the entire season and they responded with an excellent effort tonight,” said coach Ron Ashlaw, whose team is now 9-8 and has its first three-game winning streak in two years. “This was our best execution of the season, and we were able to string consecutive stops on defense.”
Waukegan trailed 48-38 late in the third quarter, then scored 19 of the next 25 points to take control.
Akeem Springs had 11 points, Jerome Davis 10 and Devonte Taylor seven for the Bulldogs. Taylor’s points all came in the closing minutes when Waukegan was putting the game away.
Johnson was the catalyst, keeping Waukegan’s fast-paced offense on the attack.
“This was an excellent win for us,” Johnson said. “This is the momentum shift we need.”
For the game, Waukegan hit 24 of 52 shots from the field.
