Wauconda too much for Vernon Hills

They danced at practices. They sang.
And told jokes.
"Fun bunch," said Vernon Hills High School coach Abbie Gutzmer of her
Cougars after a Class 3A Grayslake Central Sectional semifinal Tuesday
night.
"So many different personalities," she added. "Fun, really fun."
But Gutzmer's entertaining crew did not boogie, warble and crack folks up
Tuesday. VH (20-18) lost 25-14, 25-19 to Wauconda, three days after becoming
the first squad in program history to capture a regional title.
"We could not get anything rolling," said Gutzmer. "Wauconda had something
to do with that; Wauconda served tough."
Outside hitter Alisa Welter, one of four VH seniors, paced the Cougars'
attack with seven kills; sophomore Jasmine Tamalunas was 19-of-23 setting
with nine assists; and junior Julie Pecht reached for a team-best seven
digs.
"We lose only four (seniors)," added Gutzmer. "But those will be tough
losses."
Wauconda (20-17) faces Grayslake Central (26-12) for a sectional title Nov.
4 at 7 p.m. Neither program has ever won a sectional championship.
