Baseball: Niners take advantage of opportunities

MUNSTER — Munster gave Andrean plenty of opportunities and the 59ers repeatedly capitalized.

That formula led Andrean to a 12-0 NCC win in five innings.

“We got some timely hits,” Andrean (11-2, 5-0 NCC) head coach Dave Pishkur said. “They gave us the opportunity to have some big innings, and it was nice some guys get some hits who haven’t been hitting the ball lately.”

Munster’s (8-7, 3-2 NCC) pitchers walked seven batters and pegged two more hitters, while the defense committed two errors to help set the table for Andrean’s offense.

“We put too many of their guys on base,” said Munster head coach Bob Shinkan. “And then they came up with the big hits. Once they had us down, they had that killer instinct and they just went after it.”

In the first inning, a pair of walks helped load the bases for Andrean’s Zach Goldasich, who then ripped a double down the right field line, scoring two. Cody Haver added an RBI groundout to give Andrean a quick 3-0 lead.

“Being the visitor is only a disadvantage if you don’t score first,” Pishkur said.

The offense continued in the second inning, as Nick Martell walked and then scored on Mike Brosseau’s double. Brosseau later scored on a Munster error.

A trio of walks in the third inning loaded the bases and chased Munster starter Anthony Gomez. Brosseau then struck again, driving in two more runs with a single through the infield.

“We’ve been in a nice rhythm the last few games; definitely an improvement from our first couple of games,” said Brosseau. “It just comes down to execution. When there are runners in scoring position, we’ve got to get them in.”

Munster’s offense, meanwhile, got just one hit off Andrean starter Zak Ryan, who struck out four batters with five walks in a five-inning shutout.
