Baseball: Marmion jumps on Oswego early

Marmion jumped on Oswego with a three-run outburst in the top of the first inning and cruised to a 10-3 victory on Saturday morning in a nonconference game at Jackie’s Field of Dreams.
Left-hander Chris Simon went the distance for the Cadets, scattering five hits and allowing three runs, all which were unearned.
“I felt like I had a pretty good day,” Simon said. “I was just trying to get ahead and let my fielders do the rest of the work.”
Simon’s defense let him down with a handful of errors, but his team’s bats came through in a big way throughout the contest.
Marmion (15-9) went ahead 3-0 in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI single from first baseman Connor Medernach and a two-run double from third baseman Peter Bowe.
“With two outs I just wanted to hit it hard somewhere,” Bowe said. “I go up there aggressive hoping for a first strike and try to hop all over it so I’m not sitting back.”
Oswego (12-13) cut the deficit to 5-2 in bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI single from Tim Wodzisz, but the Panthers weren’t able to get any closer.
“We’ve been kind of struggling hitting the ball all year,” Oswego coach Chris Neitzel said. “It’s seems like when you’re struggling, like we are, everything seems magnified and goes against you.”
The Cadets broke the game open in the sixth inning. Kyle Kozak, who came up a home run short of hitting for the cycle, got things started with a double. Two runs scored on a pair of wild pitches, Mike Pipp brought in another run with a single and Mitch Sterne made it a 10-2 contest with a two-run single.
“I liked our approach at the plate today,” Marmion coach Dave Rakow said. “The guys did their job and (Chris) Simon did his job on the mound. I just wish we could clean up a few of the errors.”
The Panthers are in the midst of a big slide, having now dropped seven straight.
“We didn’t have any of our experienced guys with a lot of mound time left to throw today,” Neitzel said. “We’re struggling right now, but we can it turn around just as quick. Hopefully we can do it and get back in conference.”
