Boys Water Polo: Lyons proves too much for Morton

Lyons brought up players from all levels during a spring break boys water polo contest against Morton and received an array of scoring contributors during an 18-5 victory Thursday.
The Lions (11-2) benefited from goals by 14 players as they scored early and often against the Mustangs to stay undefeated in the West Suburban Gold.
Joe Shannon opened the floodgates for Lyons with a goal 30 seconds into the game followed by a shot into the net by senior Kovas Zygas. The two repeated their feats at the 4:45 and 4:12 marks, respectively, and the Lions went on to score three more goals to lead 7-0 at the end of the first period.
“This game gave us a chance to see where we are at after the first few weeks of the season, and the opportunity to look at players from all levels,” Lyons coach Doug Eichstaedt said. ‘’It gave a lot of boys a chance to play and to work on some things defensively. In our two losses this year we just gave up way too many goals so we want to get back to thinking about defense and trying to control the ball more on offense.’’
Morton got on the board on a goal by Charles Bosse 30 seconds into the second period, but Lyons was ahead 9-1 at halftime and peppered the Mustang net minder with shot after shot, scoring eight of the next nine goals to increase the advantage to 15-2 after three periods before each team added three goals in the final seven minutes.
‘‘We know what we need to do to win these kinds of games, we’ve been working all week in practice to improve our offense and play better on defense,’’ Zygas said. ‘’Our counter-attack is one of our biggest scoring threats and we utilized that as much as we could today and it worked on offense and made it easier to play defense.’’
Junior varsity player Nathan Krna fired in a pair of goals, while Josh Hirt, Danny McGuiness and Chris Withington were among those who also scored for Lyons. Morton’s Frank Demes and Jose Anaya also scored goals.
