York gets revenge on Lyons

York did not have to wait long to get back at Lyons for the pasting the Lions handed the Dukes two weeks ago.

And Lyons probably won’t have to wait long to get back at York for Tuesday’s beating.

But at least until the two teams meet again, probably at the Mother McAuley Preview tournament this weekend, York has bragging rights in this heated West Suburban Silver rivalry.

Caroline Rose had eight kills and two aces, Melissa Deatsch had six kills and two aces, Katie Gallagher added 16 assists and Sam Schrenker had five kills and an ace as No. 2 York (10-2, 2-0 in the Silver) defeated the Lions 25-18, 25-19 in LaGrange.

Deatsch, whose ace gave York a 16-14 lead it would never surrender in Game 2, said the Dukes were better prepared for what they faced than they were back on September 2.

“This time we knew what we were up against,” the 5-foot-11 junior outside hitter said. “We knew their strengths, we knew how to play. We adjusted our defense against their attacks. We were more knowledgeable. We were ready to play this game.

“We had a lot of motivation against this team, trust me,” she said.

Rose, whose kill off the block broke a 6-6 tie in the second set, said that the Dukes had a lot more energy in this meeting.

“We weren’t so flat,” she said. “We weren’t psyching ourselves out so much since we knew everyone on the other side of the net. We were focused on our side of the net and playing our game. We all came out and played really well as a team.”

Lyons did refuse to go down quietly in the second set, overcoming a 13-9 deficit with a 5-0 run capped by a kill from Laura Williams. But back-to-back hitting errors by Lyons and Deatsch’s ace were part of a 10-2 York run that ended any hope of a comeback.

“We have been putting a lot of time in on our freshmen and sophomores to get them up to speed, and we did not pass consistently nor did we serve consistently,” Lyons coach Joann Pyritz said. “We had a lot of unforced errors. We need to take care of that.

“We need to play a better game, but York’s a good team and they obviously have enough weapons to make a difference,” she added. “I think both teams could play better than they did tonight. It will be interesting to see what happens when we’re both playing our absolute best.”

Alexis Viliunas led Lyons (6-3, 1-1) with eight kills and 10 assists. Alyssa Keeve added seven kills and Williams had four kills and three assists.

York also got three kills from 6-foot sophomore middle Molly Schlecht and steady backrow play from 6-1 sophomore libero Amy Nosek.

“We have a couple of players who are not volleyball players and who we are trying to make volleyball players,” York coach Patty Iverson said. “Our sophomore middle, Schlecht, did a great job. She had quite a few blocks, some kills, that’s a big difference.

“I thought Schrenker played a great game,” Iverson added. “Things were happening tonight that were really good for us.”
