Softball: Grayslake North tops Lakes on walk-off

Kristina Gandy’s two-out double in the bottom of the seventh completed a comeback from a five-run deficit as host Grayslake North defeated Lakes 10-9 on Wednesday in nonconference action
Gandy’s walk-off hit scored Kelsey Borders who reached second with a two-out hit to right.
Lakes (7-4) led 7-2 in the third as the Eagles pounded North starter Nikki Livengood.
Gandy came to the rescue in the fourth, allowing two unearned runs in four innings of work.
“Kristina really shifted the momentum over to our side,” Knights coach Molly Jones said. “She took command out there on the mound. That gave our defense some confidence which, I think, trickled over into our at-bats.”
North scored two in the third and three in the fourth to tied it at 7-7. Each team scored two in the fifth to set the stage for Gandy’s game-winner.
The contest featured 28 total hits and some loose defensive play (at least nine errors).
Grayslake (5-4-1) was led offensively by Gandy (3-for-5, five RBI, two runs scored, double, reached on an error), Borders (3-for-5, double, two RBI, three runs scored), Jordyn Bowen (2-for-5, double, run scored), and Jessica Davis (2-for-4, two RBI).
“We needed this one,” Jones said. “We’ve been struggling a little bit. We’re doing so many good things, but the last few games, it’s been a couple of mistakes that have really cost us.
“Tonight, even with the errors, our bats came through for us.”
Over in the other dugout, Lakes coach Bill Hamill was disappointed with the uneven play of his squad.
“We gave them too many extra bases,” he said. “We let balls get to the wall in the outfield that we should have been able to cut off. Even that last run should have just been a base hit (by Borders).”
Leading hitters for Lakes were Megan Massie (2-for-4, double, four RBI, run scored), Montana Mang (2-for-5, reached on errors twice, three runs scored), Taylor Dishinger (2-for-3, sacrifice, RBI, run scored), and Sara Braden (2-for-4) and Jamie Dykstkra (2-for-4).
These teams will play again on Saturday as Lakes is hosting a four-team, round-robin tourney with Grayslake North, Zion-Benton and Richmond.
