Joliet Catholic has all the ‘angles’ in win

The rosters handed out Thursday night at Mother McAuley had visiting Joliet Catholic listed as the “Angles.”
“That’s funny,” Angels coach Christine Scheibe said. “Everybody always says that we’re the athletic school, but our ACT scores are the highest in Will County.”
They certainly had all the angles covered in Game 3 of a 25-22, 22-25, 25-11 victory.
“They passed the audition, but there are still things I think we could be working on,” Scheibe said.
Kelly Feigh led the way for the Angels with 13 kills, while Morgan Reardon added seven kills and five blocks, Hailey Pennington seven kills and three blocks, Lauren Robertson 20 assists, Emily Schoenstedt 15 digs and seven assists and Jillian Hickey eight digs.
For Mother McAuley, Lizzy Scanlon and Ryann Arundel each had five kills, Bridget Powell 19 digs and Courtney Joyce six kills and 21 assists.
With plenty of first-match rust resulting in a split decision after two games, Joliet Catholic broke away to a 5-0 start in Game 3. Feigh started things with a kill, after which Schoenstedt and Pennington stuffed a McAuley spike.
McAuley never would get closer than four as the Angels would dominate at the net the rest of the way.
“We kind of lost our intensity a little bit in the second game,” Feigh said. “So we were like, ‘Come on, guys, let’s go out and start from the beginning (of Game 3).’ We had energy, and we played together.
“That was the difference, I thought. Just the energy and intensity.”
And defense. Hickey was brilliant in the back row, while at the net McAuley had a hard time getting the ball over the 5-11 Reardon, 5-10 Schoenstedt and 6-foot Pennington.
“Well, I think defense is fun,” Scheibe said. “So we play a lot of games at practice in which the girls are just going for the ball all the time.
“Jill has been making big saves since she was a freshman. The more digs that we can get, the better we’re going to be able to get to our hitters and run our offense. That’s going to be a key for us this season.”
The win avenged a two-game season-opening loss in 2010 in their own gym.
“We really wanted to come back,” Pennington said. “We wanted to show what we were made of. McAuley played a great match, but we wanted it so bad, and we got it.”
