HIGHLAND — Highland and Hobart pitchers issued more free passes Tuesday than a radio station promoting a concert. The two teams combined for 25 walks in the Brickies’ 12-5 victory.

“That’s not how you would have expected that game to go with our pitcher being 3-0 and their pitcher (Jordan Minch) having the pedigree he has,” Hobart coach Bob Glover said. “But I give our guys credit for hanging in there and grinding it out.”

Hobart scored in the top of the first inning resulting from, of course, a leadoff walk. The Brickies’ Tyrus Joseforsky led off the game with a base on balls and eventually scored on a groundout by Nick Bokun. The Brickies loaded the bases on two more walks but Minch worked out of the jam.

With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Highland’s Alex Freitag, Tyler Fraley, and Kevin Roach each drew a walk from their 7-8-9 positions in the order. Freitag and Fraley both scored on a Hobart fielding error and Roach came home on a single by Minch. Three straight walks in the top of the third inning led to another Brickies run and Hobart scored two in the fourth inning on four more walks. Each of the first nine runners to cross home plate had reached base via the walk.

Hobart (10-1) broke the game open with a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning. Five walks combined with two-RBI singles by both Phil Madvek and Chris Moore accounted for the damage.

“They had seven runs on two hits,” said Highland coach Dan Miller. “It was really ugly.”

The three major league scouts in attendance couldn’t get a good read on Minch with their radar guns and it was probably just as well. Minch (0-1) lasted only 31/3 innings, surrendering 10 walks but just two earned runs. CJ Komasa (2-0) picked up the win for Hobart.
