Vince Doran, Hinsdale South’s boys basketball coach and director of last season’s inaugural Hinsdale South Holiday Tournament, was relieved of his duties, said Hinsdale South athletic director Tim Feigh.
“We are posting the job (at www.hinsdale86.org) … we are looking for a head boys basketball coach,” Feigh said on Tuesday.
Doran led the Hornets to a 15-12 record last season, including a 6-6 mark in the West Suburban Conference Gold. Hinsdale South lost to West Aurora 59-36 in an IHSA Class 4A regional final.
The Hornets were led by 6-8 Brock Benson, who signed with NCAA Division III Hope College in Michigan earlier this month.
Doran was reached by phone, but refused to comment on the school’s decision.
Doran played high school basketball at Driscoll, and attended Olivet Nazarene, Lewis University and Elmhurst College. He is a business teacher at Hinsdale South.
Doran made headlines during the 2010-11 season, when he said he would file a complaint with the IHSA when news leaked that Young of the Chicago Public League held a practice at a Burr Ridge middle school, which is located in Hinsdale South’s district. He considered the practice an effort by Young to recruit a highly touted player from the school.
Doran was the driving force last season behind Hinsdale South’s effort to host a new 16-team holiday tournament. Top-seeded Metea Valley won the tournament’s first title with a 64-52 victory over second-seeded Schaumburg on Dec. 30.
Doran’s replacement will work with a new athletic director, as Feigh will retire at the end of the current school year. The District 86 school board named Kim Maloney as Feigh’s replacement a few weeks ago.
