Boys Tennis: Hinsdale Central, New Trier tie for Kramer Invitational title

If Jared Hiltzik plays against Jason Brown too many times, Hiltzik doesn’t complain about it.
The battle between last year’s second and third place singles finishers in the state meet was a familiar one Saturday at Hinsdale Central’s Kramer Invitational. New Trier’s Hiltzik, the defending state runner-up, beat Deerfield’s Brown 6-1, 6-3 to win the title in the eight-team meet.
The match was a repeat of Tuesday’s dual meet between the foes when Hiltzik beat Brown 6-3, 6-3 in the first meeting between the two this season.
“You get used to it. I see him all the time,” Hiltzik said. “We are pretty good friends.”
But there is no guarantee that the duo will meet again next weekend at Hersey’s Pitchford Invitational, which is considered a mini state tournament. Hiltzik said he may not compete in order to give his younger brother, Aron, New Trier’s No. 2 singles player, better exposure against some of the top singles players in the state. Hiltzik said he will talk with coach Tad Eckert in the next few days about what the team’s plans will be.
Aron Hiltzik defeated Oak Park-River Forest’s Luke Trinka 6-3, 4-6 (10-6) to take fifth place at the Kramer Invitational.
Jared Hiltzik finished second place at Kramer last season and remains undefeated on the season.
“The first time the weather conditions were not ideal,” Hiltzik said. “It was really, really windy. I felt I was playing pretty well.
New Trier, the defending champion at Kramer, tied the host Devils (75 points each) to force a tie for the tournament title. Hinsdale Central won its own tournament title for the second time in three years.
The Trevians had an opportunity to win the tournament outright with a win in the final match, but Highland Park’s Zacho Brint and Danny Wynbrandt won the doubles championship with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory over New Trier’s Alex Galoustian and Alex Mang. Brint and Wynbrandt handed Hinsdale Central’s Peter Heneghan and Alex Hagermoser their first loss of the season with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 win in the semifinals.
Brint and Wynbrandt entered the tournament after coming off their first loss of the season against Glenbrook South within the last week. Brint and Wynbrandt will play at Pitchford Friday and Saturday in a wide open tournament in terms of the double brackets after Heneghan and Hagermoser, the top seed at Kramer, were defeated.
“I think our mental game came out when we won the super-tiebreaker against Hinsdale Central. In the third set against New Trier, we had to stay strong under pressure,” Wynbrandt said. “I hope we can keep it up. This is my first year playing doubles all year. It’s nice.”
