Girls Soccer: Highland Park plays Libertyville to scoreless tie

Despite playing to a 0-0 draw in Saturday’s match against Libertyville that had very few scoring opportunities, visiting Highland Park was largely content because of its lopsided loss to the Wildcats last season.

“I definitely do think we deserved to win, especially coming into this game from last year,” Highland Park junior defender Lilly Shannon said. “I think Libertyville definitely thought they were going to come out on top because last year we lost 4-0 to them. This is a great step up for us.”

With four-year starter Morgan Bartelstein missing her third consecutive game because of a concussion, Shannon assumed the leadership responsibilities on the defensive end against the Wildcats.

The Giants’ defense, which forced Libertyville to commit myriad offside violations, was flawless Saturday, excluding one golden opportunity.

Libertyville freshman Mia Hollingsworth shot past Highland Park’s backline in the match’s 57th minute and tried to beat Highland Park goalkeeper Grace Quirk with a low shot at close range. The freshman’s attempt ricocheted off Quirk’s shin, however, preserving a result with which Libertyville coach Scott Schinto was not pleased.

“I don’t think we played well enough to win,” Schinto said. “We didn’t get enough shots on the frame. I think we’re better than what we showed, but that’s a credit to Highland Park.”
