Marmion’s 21-7 Suburban Christian Conference crossover win against Guerin Saturday put the Cadets in playoff-qualifying territory.

They are now 5-3 overall with Blue Division champion Marian Central left to play in the regular season.

“We have a lot of points (to get in the playoffs),” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “We want to be 6-3. We want to be there. We wanted to be conference champs...but (we) are going to enjoy this.”
Added Marmion senior Fred d’Escoto: “This win was definitely crucial. Now we have a little momentum going into our game with Marian.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Marmion’s Jake Ruddy recorded a 14-yard carry.

The 7-0 score stuck until 5:07 in the third quarter, when d’Escoto nabbed an interception and ran for a 36-yard touchdown.

“It was very exciting,” d’Escoto said. “I had a couple of great blocks ahead of me, which was great for the touchdown.”

Victor Roza’s six-yard run gave Marmion the 21-0 advantage with 1:50 left in the game.
“We went to battle with a really good football team who will make some noise in the playoffs,” Guerin coach Tony Pecoraro said of the Cadets.
Guerin quarterback Tommy Kelly muscled in for a one-yard run with 22.5 remaining to put the Gators on the scoreboard.

“We were hoping to score more, but (Guerin) played us tough,” Ruddy said. “But once we started moving the ball and gaining momentum, we started to score.”
