Other than the game’s opening kickoff, everything else went the way Guerin (2-1, 1-0) had hoped, as the Gators earned their first ever Suburban Christian Blue win with a 34-7 victory over Walther Lutheran (1-2, 0-1) on Saturday afternoon in Melrose Park.

Junior Najee Toomer returned the opening kick to give Walther a 7-0 lead. Guerin responded with a tying scoring drive, ending with senior quarterback Tommy Kelly’s touchdown pass to Justin Williams.

Williams scored on a 67-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage in the second half to increase the Gators lead to 21-7.

“The biggest thing is that we took a punch by them and came back,” Guerin coach Tony Pecoraro said. “I told them that it’s a long game and to stay confident and trust in us.”

Kelly threw a touchdown pass to junior wide receiver John Dabe one minute into the second quarter to establish the Gators’ first lead of the afternoon. On fourth-and-eight from the Walther 33, Kelly found Dabe at the five, and Dabe spun into the end zone for a 14-7 Guerin advantage.

The Gators sealed the game when Matt DeLeon and Matt Gallardo each scored rushing touchdowns, giving them a 34-7 lead with 2:17 remaining.

Guerin’s defense stopped the Broncos from scoring three times inside the red zone.
