Guerin rudely welcomed Marine Military Academy to opening night in River Grove as the Gators led 20-0 just 4:07 into the game on their way to a 55-0 drubbing of the Bulldogs on Friday. Senior running back Justin Williams scored four times with three coming on the ground and one on a screen pass.
“We’re 1-0, so I’m not going to complain,” said Gators’ coach Tony Pecoraro. “Our running game was working well. Williams is a stud, and (Eric) Giovenco had a good night.”
Giovenco, junior Kevin Doyle, and seniors Alex Sullivan and Matt Deleon each made their way into the end zone once as the Gators built a lead of 48-0 by halftime to set up a running clock the rest of the way. Guerin’s ground attack posted five runs of 30 or more yards in the contest.
Defensively, Pat O’Brien recovered a fumble in a slow-moving first quarter that helped set up the second Gator touchdown. Junior John Dabe recorded an interception late in the third quarter to steal another Bulldog possession. Marine (0-1) only reached Guerin territory twice, with one of those coming on a great kickoff return by Odis Nix.
