Football: Russ Radtke appears to be staying at Griffith

The ongoing saga of Russ Radtke’s coaching future may be on hold for at least a year.

It has been speculated for several weeks that the longtime head football coach at Griffith High School — 19 seasons to be exact — was headed east to become the new coach at New Prairie.

But there was never a football coach item on last week’s New Prairie School Board meeting agenda. Now this week, a former member of Radtke’s staff still close to the legendary coach said that Radtke told him he will remain at Griffith at least one more season as he tries to reach the coveted 300-win mark.

Radtke, who has also coached at North Judson and Connersville in his 36 years, has 290 victories according to the Indiana Football Coaches Association website.

Griffith athletic director Bill Crowley said nothing has changed in his preparation for the fall.

“I haven’t heard that he’s leaving at all,” Crowley said. “We plan on Russ being our football coach next year.”

Radtke did not return mutliple voice mail messages left on Wednesday.
