The under card is finally complete and Malachy Schrobilgen is ready for the main event.
The Oak Park-River Forest senior, who’s one of the favorites to win the Class 3A boys cross country title, cruised to an easy win in the Fenwick Regional Saturday morning at Schiller Woods in Schiller Park. Schrobilgen covered the 3-mile course in 14 minutes, 52.8 seconds to lead the qualifying for next weekend’s Niles West Sectional.
“Next two weeks are all that really matters,” said Schrobilgen, referring to sectional and the Nov. 5 state meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria. “I’m not going to get too carried away with times or anything like that.”
He beat runner-up Patrick Niyork of Willowbrook (15:02.5) by just under 10 seconds, and is expecting plenty of competition next week from the likes of New Trier’s Leland Later.
“I’m looking forward to racing against him,” Schrobilgen said. “He’s had a good season so far. I think we run different styles of races, so we’ll see what we can do there.”
The rest of the pack couldn’t keep up with Schrobilgen Saturday. “The first mile was nice and fast,” Niyork said. “We all tried to stay with Schrobilgen. That didn’t work too well, but it was a fun race.”
York, ranked second by DyeStatIL.com in Class 3A, had five runners in the top 10 and beat No. 20 Oak Park 33-79 for the regional title. Scott Milling (third), Kyle Mattes (sixth) and Jack Libert (seventh) led the Dukes.
Like Schrobilgen, Lake Park’s Kaylee Flanagan had a comfortable win, taking the girls race in 17:00.4, with Glenbard East’s Lindsey Rakosnik (17:10.0) in second.
“She’s a really strong runner,” Flanagan said of Rakosnik. “We were just going to push each other and see where it goes, that was the goal.”
No. 11 York had four runners in the top eight and finished with 40 points, edging No. 7 Glenbard West (49) and No. 3 Lake Park (55). Emma Fisher (third) and Kayla Spencer (fifth) set the pace for York.
