Girls Soccer: New Trier wears down Niles West
Maddie Mulford was starving to score all game.
By the time the New Trier sophomore finally got a goal in the 79th minute Saturday, it didn’t even matter in the team’s 3-0 win over Niles West in Skokie.
“I was a little goal-hungry by the end,” the second-year starting striker said. “I had to finish that last one.”
The Trevians (2-0) misfired on the net all afternoon before breaking the scoreless tie on Maddy McGinnis’ goal with 14:37 to go in the game.
Jess Weaver did the work first by blasting a shot on goal that was blocked by Niles West’s Heather Koder. McGinnis collected the loose ball and shot it past goalie Jackie Cardenas.
Emily Miller added the second goal with 2:04 to play before Mulford completed the scoring 35 seconds later.
“That was frustrating in the first half,” said New Trier assistant coach Dan Rogan, who filled in for the absent Jim Burnside. “We had a lot of chances early, and we didn’t finish. We couldn’t find the back of the net, but we were patient.”
Meanwhile, the Wolves (0-3) were pleased to go into the half tied 0-0. They did their best to fight off New Trier’s persistent pressure, but they had no answers on offense.
Vicki Tirovolas, Niles West’s freshman sensation, never got going, constantly corralled by New Trier’s defense. Tirovolas came into Saturday will all four of the team’s goals in two games.
“The other girls were not filling up the lanes with her,” Wolves coach Brett Clish said. “She could only do so much.”
Clish was happy with how his defense, which struggled in allowing nine goals in its first two games, kept the Trevians out of the net for nearly 66 minutes.
“But all three goals were defensive lapses,” Clish lamented. “We were over-committing on defense, not taking good angles and getting beat on the outside.”
New Trier earned its second shutout of the season after opening up the spring with a 2-0 win over Stevenson.
