Girls Tennis: Carol Finke, Trevians dominate New Trier Sectional

New Trier’s Carol Finke won New Trier Sectional singles titles as a freshman and a sophomore, but her reign as sectional champion was in question for much of the current season.

Finke missed the first six weeks of the girls tennis season after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in her right wrist in the middle of August.

Despite the time missed, Finke returned on Sept. 29 and claimed her third consecutive sectional crown on Saturday. The New Trier junior breezed through her competition in the two-day tournament, dropping only two games in four matches. She defeated teammate Taylor Tamblyn, 6-0, 6-2, to win the sectional’s singles title.

The Trevians won their sectional 27-19 over second-place Loyola.

“I’m really happy just to be playing again, so that’s really big for me,” Finke said. “I just love being out there, so that’s what’s special; that I was able to come back, play, and be in a sectional against a teammate and a really good friend.”

New Trier finished first and second in singles, and finished first and third in doubles. Cammy Frei and Kirstie Woodbury defeated Loyola’s Jennie Gault and Nora Hughes, 6-2, 6-2, to win the New Trier Sectional’s doubles title.

While Loyola came in second, the Ramblers left the Glenview Tennis Club happy. Loyola advanced all four of its sectional entrants to the state tournament, including singles players Hannah Post and Hannah Nichols and doubles team Kristin Marren and Meredith O’Brien.

Lily Schroeder and Alex Wolkoff were the Trevians’ fourth team to advance.

Although seeing New Trier win its own sectional has become a regular occurrence during Finke’s three years, she feels winning sectionals remains a significant accomplishment for the Trevians.

“I think that we expect ourselves to win out there, but we’re going to be really excited about winning the sectional title,” Finke said.
