Cailee Beisswanger didn’t let a little rain ruin one of the best rounds of her high school golf career.
Beisswanger beat favored teammate Rosanna Lederhausen for the Class AA Naperville North Regional title Wednesday by two strokes and tied a career best with a 2-over-par 74 at Springbrook Golf Course in Naperville. It was the best score of the season for Beisswanger, who shot her other 74 last season.
“It was a light drizzle,” Beisswanger said. “It was not that bad. I’ve played in the rain so many times. I’m used to it.”
Beisswanger used three birdies, mainly on the back nine, to lead Hinsdale Central (311) to its sixth regional title in seven years by beating West Suburban Silver rival Lyons (333). The host Huskies (338) grabbed the third team qualifying spot for the Marian Catholic Sectional Monday at Coyote Run Golf Club in Flossmoor. The Devils won their 13th regional title in school history.
Lederhausen, a newly crowned four-time conference champion, was the regional runner-up after winning last year’s Hinsdale Central Regional with a 76 at Seven Bridges in Woodridge. Zoe Wong’s 80 gave three of the top five individual spots in the regional to Hinsdale Central golfers.
Stready rain affected the first half of the tournament as only four golfers shot in the 70s.
Grzesiak, a junior, led Naperville North on its home course with a career-best 78, seven strokes better than any previous total in her career.
“I knew I was capable of it,” Grzesiak said. “I was really surprised. I was never content playing a round like that.”
Lyons junior Ciara Rattana advanced to her third sectional tournament by leading her team with a 78 to tie for third.
“It was pretty good, especially where I coulda, shoulda, woulda for one or two holes,” Rattana said.
Hinsdale South senior Jessica Sachs qualified for her fourth sectional with an 86 to grab one of 10 sectional spots to individuals not on qualifying teams.
“It was my putting,” Sachs said. “Today I four putt nearly every hole even when I was on the green in regulation. It was down hill from there.”
