Baseball: Oak Forest’s Kyle Funkhouser, Simeon’s Corey Ray highlight the Sun-Times’ 2012 All-Area selections

FIRST TEAM

RHP: Kyle Funkhouser, Oak Forest, sr.: A two-time All-Area pick, the hard-throwing right-hander was again lights-out, racking up 123 strikeouts in 782/3 innings. He finished his senior season 11-2 with an 0.89 ERA. Signed with Louisville.

LHP: Kevin Duchene, Joliet Catholic, sr.: No one was more dominant than Duchene, who yielded only one earned run all season against top-level competition. He finished 8-0 with an 0.14 ERA and strikeout/walk ratio of 93/9 in 51 innings. Signed with Illinois.

RHP: Jack Landwehr, Prospect, sr.: Finished with an 0.59 ERA and 100 strikeouts to 11 walks in 702/3 innings. Also batted .417 with nine doubles and 21 RBI. Signed with Illinois State.

Catcher: Tanner Scott, Burlington Central, sr.: One of the top power bats in the state, Scott hit .433 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI and slugged at an .875 clip.

1B: Zach Jones, Glenbrook South, sr.: The sweet-swinging left-handed hitter batted .463 with 16 doubles, six triples, two homers and 29 RBI. He also scored 40 runs. Signed with Northwestern.

MIF: Kevin Ross, Niles West, sr.: Drafted in the eighth round by the Pirates, Ross is one of the most exciting players in the state. He finished with 16 doubles, two triples, two homers, 20 RBI and 30 stolen bases. Signed with Michigan.

MIF: Chris Tschida, Joliet Catholic, jr.: Tschida batted .495 with 10 doubles, seven triples, three homers and 33 RBI. He also scored 37 runs and had a .626 on-base percentage.

3B: Dan Durkin, Andrew, jr.: The left-handed hitter finished with a .514 batting average despite being pitched around. He also had three homers and 30 RBI and scored 41 runs while playing a stellar third base.

OF: Corey Ray, Simeon, jr.: The left-handed hitter helped lead the Wolverines to the city title by hitting .453 with six doubles, five triples, five homers and 35 RBI. He also scored 35 runs while playing an excellent center field. Verbally committed to Louisville.

OF: Zack Weigel, Oak Park-River Forest, sr.: Weigel led the Class 4A state champion Huskies by hitting .431 with 14 doubles, five homers and 41 RBI and scoring 40 runs. A top-level defensive center fielder, he also went 6-1 with a 1.71 ERA as a pitcher. Signed with Seton Hall.

OF: Tyler Jay, Lemont, sr.: Known more for his pitching prowess, Jay was impressive at the plate, too. He finished with a .512 batting average, 10 doubles and 32 RBI. The hard-throwing left-hander signed with Illinois as a pitcher.

Utility: Keith Lehmann, Lyons, jr.: The two-way talent did it all for the Lions. On the mound, he went 9-2 with an 0.94 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 67 innings. Offensively, he had 12 doubles, seven homers and 33 RBI.
